There was something peculiar about Lake. He had an enigmatic appearance, like he was out of his element. And his eyes were crystal blue, like Aquamarine, and when he looked at a person, the eyes were all they could take in.

He hung out by the cafeteria doors with a group of wolves who stared and drooled at the girls streaming into lunch. Everyday when he saw Suze, he stood frozen in place, then stiffly opened a door for her.

Her friend Lainey said that after school Lake worked in the forest, cutting firewood for the locals. He’s hot and I think he likes you, she added.

Suze responded that he was odd. Lainey pointed out that “odd” was someone who wore a bright red hooded coat when visiting her grandmother deep in the woods.

Lake continued for weeks to stare at Suze, and with such intensity that she finally invited him to sit with her for lunch. Uninvited, his whole pack of creeper friends sat down with them.

Lake had a tender quality, he spoke softly and used economy with words. Finally he asked her out. Suze risked a “yes.” And as she got closer to Lake, a dark and guarded adventure began.
