A Modern-Day Love Story
About the girl…
Said the young man, “She’s Jack’s sister, Kelly. The cheerleader type, pretty. Not an airhead. She was president of the debate club, actually. Jack said she started applying to colleges, wanting to be a lawyer. Then, she drops out of school and disappears. I see her again, and she’s at Vernon visiting some pretty bad men and with a baby in her arms. There’s a vulnerability, I think; but at the same time, something’s wrong. Like there’s this mystery, a secret. Maybe fear. I don’t know what she’s gotten herself into.”
About the guy…
“His name is Chris,” said Kelly. "A prison guard. Still working on his degree in some physical therapy program, I believe. He’s a couple years older and was Jack’s friend. I was this bratty kid sister, I guess. He was good-looking, so… But he ignored me. Wanted nothing to do with me, as if he’d rather I got lost forever. Now, it’s like I can’t get rid of him or something. He showed up at the grocery store to help me then at my door to work on the car. Then, he says he’ll work on it again. I don’t know what he wants. I guess I’m not comfortable with any of this, about what he wants. He won’t tell me.”
And one little baby…Agape.
