PROLOGUE
New Orleans, Louisiana, 1836
The hustle and bustle of the last two months had been a blur, as the finishing touches were put on her wedding. It was just what she needed to keep her from giving in to the grief of losing Kamen, her beautiful slave lover -- the man she loved body and soul.
Night after night Victoria tossed and turned in her bed. The feel of Kamen's body invaded her dreams and her waking hours. Many times, her hand stole between her legs in the middle of the night to somewhat relieve the ache of the broiling passion that was a constant in her for him.
She swear she could literally feel him entering her sometimes, and would wake panting for breath.
"You have to get control of yourself, Victoria. You'll soon be a married woman; sharing another man's bed -- and the sooner you get used to it the better," she said to her reflection in the vanity in her bedroom.
. . .
No matter whose child it was -- her slave lover's or her husband's -- she wanted it. As an only child, being a mother was a dream near and dear to her heart. This would be the first of what she hoped was many more to come.
But at what price if the child was Kamen's?
She'd be shunned by society for sure.
Her husband would never accept the fact that his wife had given birth to another man's child, especially a slave's. Although he'd been good to her, she heard about his brutal side. What would that mean for her?
And her father. She knew he loved her, but he'd disown her without a second thought for shaming him in such a manner.
The only person she knew she'd be able to turn to would be her aunt. But what would it cost her if she supported her niece? Could Victoria stand to see her shunned?
Where could she go? What would she do if she were pregnant and the child she carried belong to her slave lover?
And what would it mean for Kamen? If anyone ever found out he was the father, it could literally mean death for him.
All this ran through Victoria's mind as she lay there waiting for the doctor. What was supposed to be a joyous time for a new bride was a potential nightmare for her.
This child … it could be a blessing or a curse.
