“Honey, I was…would you like to come over this afternoon?”

George paused and held the phone a little closer to his ear. He had been making some lunch when Missy had called, had continued putting together a sandwich through the initial chatter and pleasantries, but this demanded his full attention.

“I thought it was…you know, your time to-“

“I know. It is. Would you- would you be okay coming over? If you want to, that is.”

He took a deep breath. Licked his lips. This was a big step. “I’ll be over in half an hour.”

He could hear the smile in her voice when she answered. “Sounds good. I’ll be here.”

The call clicked off, but he held the phone still for another moment, smiling like a fool in his kitchen.

It was not every day that one’s snake-folk girlfriend was comfortable enough to shed her skin around you.
