Twice Told Tales is a collection of works written by Hawthorne, and by his own words, are " ... stories (which) were published in magazines and Annuals, extending over a period of ten or twelve years and comprising the whole of the writer's young manhood..."
Twice Told Tales is actually a compilation of short stories that he had written during his time while working at the Boston Custom House, where he allowed his daydreams to come to life in his writings. He submitted these stories to magazines and other publications, but even when they were published, they did not bring much acclaim to their author. It wasn’t until 1837 that Horatio Bridge took this collection and created Twice Told Tales that Hawthorne’s name began to become known. After the success of The Scarlet Letter in 1850, this book was re-released with a new and retrospective preface (included in this version of the book) from the author himself regarding these works.
This book also includes:
• A detailed biography of Nathaniel Hawthorne,
• Helpful glossary of Old-English words found in these stories.
