"Doctor Zhivago--Edited and Annotated" is a historical romance revision of Boris Pasternak's Nobel Prize winning book "Doctor Zhivago." Yuri Zhivago is an idealistic doctor and poet who acts as a reluctant witness to the momentous events surrounding the meteoric rise and inevitable corruption of Soviet communism. His idyllic love for Lara is relentlessly threatened by historical events which he must face. Simultaneously, he must reconcile with his wife and family.
Translations have varied from publisher to publisher and hampered a clear understanding of Pasternak's flow and purpose. The difficulties of all translations are epitomized in the Italian saying "traduttore/traditore--translator/traitor."
In this shortened and annotated edition (definitions, etc.), every effort was made to keep the significant names and locations of the original story as well as the historical timeline. The editor focused on the deletion of extraneous characters and esoteric dialogues. Also, convoluted and antiquated phrasing was simplified and updated to contemporary, conversational English.
This e-book will avail the reader of the "search" function when there are questions about "who's who" in the story. Characters have polysyllabic names that are: given: child, adult and diminutive; patronymic and surname. Moreover, aliases are also used. "Stalin" (Iosif Vissarionovich), the dictator of the Soviet Union from 1929-53 after Lenin's death in 1924, was a code name meaning "man of steel"--the name of a guard at his Tsarist prison from which he escaped.
