The Major
Meet "The Major" – a man who had the same exact birth date as Adolph Hitler and in a series of ironical twists and coincidences became a friend of his. As a result of Hitler's uncharacteristic accommodation and tolerance, this man threaded his way, as a Jew, at various times through Hitler's life. They served together in WWI, and as the two moved forward in life, they continued to associate, until Hitler became the Fuhrer; and still the relationship continued at the casual level. One day in a formal military meeting, the Fuhrer looked around for the man who had proven to be a comfortable fixture in his life, and asked one of his officers, "Where is the Major?" At that moment, this intricate, fatalistic, expressive man became "The Major" and remained that way until the end of the war for Germany in 1945.
In 1950, at a ski resort in Austria, the Major recognized a vacationing couple, Ty and Britta Culler. He had known the Cullers as agents who had participated in various aspects of Allied and Nazi Intelligence operations during the war. Tyrus Culler was an American working for British Intelligence. Britta Blau, originally a Nazi agent, eventually ended up working for the Allies. Both intended to destroy the Nazi empire from the inside, out. The Major knew that, but Ty and Britta were not aware that he knew it. That afternoon and early evening resulted in the Major's reminiscence and a period of retrospection and introspection for all of them. But, the Major is a tormented man. He knew all the players and needed to explain them to the Cullers. The Major's unusual Shakespearian approach and theatrical presentation made for an emotional event.
Share in this dramatic, and at times amusing, experience, as this fictional character presents both reflection and projection of the past for the sake of the future.
