Whip and Monty are reluctant lovers who live for the big payback.
Whip Dagger is back in town and seeking revenge. He’s going to make the Ross family pay for everything they did to him but first he’s going to give the whole town a wake-up call they will never forget.
Excerpt
Whip Dagger sat astride his horse on the top of the mountain that overlooked Canyon City, nestled in the valley below. It was just a bit before noon. He surveyed the town as far as his one eye would allow him. The streets bustled with life, people rushing to do their shopping before it got late and all the good produce were gone. It was still early but there was plenty to do. The townspeople really had no idea how much time was left.
Whip had agonized for days as to whether he should destroy the town completely to teach them a valuable lesson or just give them a jolt to shake them up. He remembered the words of a criminal he had once shared a jail cell with. “Killing folks in one swoop would be easier, but if you kill ’em they aren’t going to learn anythin’.”
Whip thought about what the convict had said. They needed to be taught. First he’d teach the townsfolk a real good lesson and then he’d savor the actual kill on the Ross family. He lit one of his trademark black cigars and inhaled slowly. Sheriff Masterson would be having his usual late breakfast of steak, eggs and coffee at Mabel’s Diner with Judge Murphy right about now. It would be a harsh punishment he’d be doling out, but it would be an ample payback for an unjust verdict. The town always supported the Ross family. The Ross’s were the next best thing Texas had to royalty. They weren’t necessarily a noble family. No one seemed to mind that it was a black family that dominated in this region. Anyone going up against the family wouldn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of coming out on top. And certainly not if the Ross’s had it in for you personally.
Those who put the Ross clan on a pedestal and put Whip on the most wanted list, would think about him the next time the word circumstantial was mentioned. They would learn the meaning of the term reasonable doubt. He wished he had a mile long fuse to light. It would certainly prolong the anticipation, heighten the tension, and increase the drama. Whip Dagger was back in town and loved a flashy entrance even if he were the only one to witness it. He puffed on the black cigar till it burned his fingers. He rested his hand on the detonator. Then he pushed it down.
