The only constant theme in the political landscape of Cameroon is its hundred-year old patriotic cause to found a new nation-state. Called Kamerunism or its synonym Cameroonian union-nationalism, the idea and ideal stood up against German colonialism until it was crushed by the execution of its leaders in 1914.

This cause of uniting the land's diverse ethnic groups and founding a new, modern, developed, liberal and progressive Cameroon was the force behind the reunification and independence of both British Southern Cameroons and French Cameroun in the second phase of the Cameroonian struggle, even though the Kamerunists were prevented from power by France and the system it put in place in Cameroon. This grass roots idea and ideal of Kamerunism survived the third phase of the struggle in the 1990s despite the onslaught on it by the system and the collaborators in Cameroon's so-called opposition.
