This is a true, dramatized case study, founded on real-life incidents and situations. Are you a Type II diabetic? Are you related to or associated with an existing Type II diabetic ? Have you been recently diagnosed? Are you a healthcare professional, physician, psychiatrist, sociologist, dietician, nutritionist, or diabetes educator? If so, and you are driven by actual statistics, you may find this personal documentary informative, and possibly required reading.
The ordeal presented in this case study, began in 2005, when Greg, born in 1944, went for his yearly physical and prostate check. This book began as a means to complain to Greg's family physician the way he was treated when informed that he was now a Type II diabetic and what he had to prepare for and look forward to in the near and far future. He received no satisfaction, only a prescription and a business card referring him to the local hospital Diabetes Education Department. The last words from the doctor were, "You will never be able to control this with diet." In part, this was true; Greg and his wife would have to become disciplinarians to make this statement incorrect.
From 2005 to 2012, they were successful, but in any situation, things change, and in 2012, unrelated dental problems changed their program. In order to maintain nutrition, Greg's diabetes program became more difficult to control, and resulted in a hospital situation with a dangerously high blood sugar level. Upon leaving the hospital, there was a period of time where he had to inject insulin. As soon as was reasonable, Greg and his wife worked diligently to gradually wean him off insulin altogether; it worked and Greg was able to, with Elizabeth's total dedication, control his sugar once again with diet that continues today.
Some time later, Greg suffered a burst appendix and ended up in the hospital. A particular hospitalist was very instrumental in getting him to understand what he needed to do. To date, Greg and Elizabeth are continuing with their eating plan, and the details of their program are in this book. According to his current physician, Greg will always be a diabetic and is required to have an HBa1c test quarterly. The last three readings averaged 6.1, which is within the range accepted as "pre-diabetic."
It is hoped you find, in this case study, information that will help you find your own way of dealing, not only with the stress and strain of having a medical condition, but developing a way to deal with it by applying a positive outlook and a well-designed program. Greg has Elizabeth, competent medical advisors, an optimistic attitude and a great meal plan. Needless to say, it is founded on fewer carbohydrates than is typical for people without diabetes, and encourages reasonable controls and, above all, no supplements or medicines, just common sense. Good luck.
