In the tradition of Herman Melville's seafaring travel books comes this extraordinary recounting of one man's adventures across the Pacific Ocean from 1837-1849. Though he did not identify himself, other than as a merchant and longtime resident at Tahiti, he was clearly educated and a keen observer of all he saw and experienced.

Through the Marquesas, the Marianas, Papeete, China, Tahiti, the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), and eventually to San Francisco (which alone is worth the price of the book), our unnamed guide shares fascinating details about the topography, oceans, people, and flora and fauna of the South Pacific.

Before travel became accessible to many, this was real adventure. Melville's "Moby Dick" was published the same year as this one and the British author gives his opinion of Melville's writing.

For less than you'd spend on gas going to the library, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.
