His life is considered by some to be near perfect, however a dark cloud looms as jealousy and envy begin to fill the hearts of those Dantès consider his friends.
The treasurer of Dantès ship, Dunglars, envies a young Dantès's achievements; a man named Fernand Mondego is in love with Mercédès and so covets Dantès success in love; and a neighbour, Caderousse, simply envies everything about the successful young man. Together this group of men conspire to sabotage Dantès life by drafting a letter accusing him of treason, which leads to his incarceration at the infamous Château d'If, a notorius prison for political prisoners.
