Fabian is gaining muscle, Emmett is gaining fat. Will their unspoken love be enough to save them?

Fabian is obsessed by his body image and that of those around him. His hatred of fat people drives him to take a leap into the unknown a move that has drastic consequences for his relationship with fashion designer Emmett.

Excerpt:

Fabian worked hard on his gym perfect body and resented anyone who didn’t see the value in looking good. He believed every negative stereotype he had ever heard about fat people. They were sick, lazy, undisciplined and not worthy of love. He convinced his best friend-with-benefits, fashion designer Emmett Cooper, to leave Orlando, Florida with him for at least a few weeks to regroup. Florida in the summer was full of fat families and Emmett shared Fabian’s views on obesity, only not as extreme. He was in the business of looking good.

Charleston, South Caroline is one of the most beautiful cities in America. Gorgeous Southern-style homes, beautiful parks, and a historic waterfront area. But It was the hottest summer on record for Charleston. Fabian and Emmett had chosen the hottest month of the year to visit the antebellum state. “Not much of a change weather-wise” Emmett said as he hauled their suitcase out of the taxi. Fabian was wearing a white tank top, shorts and sandals. He was dressed for the weather and still he was sweating profusely. Emmett had already started complaining.

“I do not get it. We left Orlando in the 90’s to come to Charleston in the 100’s. You must be nuts and I’m even crazier to be accompanying you. Good thing the hotel has air conditioning which I intend to enjoy to the fullest. But I bet this place is gorgeous in the springtime. All them yellow jessamine plants in bloom. I don’t much care for your choice of climate but I am expanding my business and am in the market for new locations. I can write off this whole trip, if I don’t sit around the pool all day!” Emmett said as he helped unpack the car. Fabian on the other hand was more easily entertained. Even if it involved sitting on a park bench vilifying every overweight person he saw.

“I couldn’t stand it any longer. Everywhere I went I was confronted with fat people. I couldn’t stop gawking, I couldn't stop commenting and I know how much you hate it. I thought I’d do you a favor by relocating us for a break. And I have friends here. We could have stayed in a real Carolinian home but you wanted to stay in a hotel like a big princess. Luckily it’s a tax write off for you. I love benefitting from your snobbiness. Where’s that liquor bar?” Fabian had been benefitting from his friend’s largess for years, and between that and the sex, they were practically life partners. The idea had crossed both their minds but it was a conversation best put off for a later time.

Fabian was not done with his rant.

“What is so hard about exercising and cutting calories. I like being around good looking people is that too much to ask? Am I asking for the stars here?”

There was not a lot of justification for Fabian’s rants since he was not what you would call a people person. He wasn’t overly popular with skinny people either. Emmett rolled his eyes. “I agree with you my friend. I can’t waste my time on people who cannot wear my trendy, sleek fashions.” Said Emmett. Who was not above throwing Fabian a reality check every now and then.

“If I recall, you were a real porker just a few years ago. No one hounded you to get in shape. You weren’t nearly so bellicose on the subject either.” Emmett sniffed.“
And If you recall I had a health scare. High blood pressure and a mini stroke. It was a wakeup call. Now I’m just concerned for those other people that don't see the risk in being overweight.” Fabian privately knew his concern was based on his own insecurities. He lived in fear of becoming that fat guy again, hanging at death’s door. “I’ll thank you not to remind me of my own mortality and frailties, thank you very much.” Replied Fabian as he slammed the car door.

Emmett had figured out that secret long ago. The last thing Fabian would want, was to be reminded of his own frailty and his mortality.

“The only thing worse than a reformed smoker is a reformed fatty. You need to stop and let people have their space, and live their lives. It gets tiring hearing you rant about fat folks all the time. I love you Fabian but you have to let people live their lives on their own terms without you picking on them.” Emmett said emphatically.
