When glamorous Mike and Alithea Davis arrive in a quiet cathedral city in the late 1950s they cause a considerable stir. Forty years later, attending her old headmistress’s funeral in that same city, Dilly nostalgically recalls the impact this couple had on her life, particularly her unrequited passion for Mike. For many years she’s wondered what happened to them and has never been able to solve the mystery of their sudden disappearance. But now this return to the scene of her schooldays seems to have started something. Gradually the past is restored. But how will the reappearance of her lost love affect her life and her marriage?
