Death is about to give up his power, but with the help of a bird.

Set in the desert city of El Paso, Texas in the early 1950s, Death has come to realize that his purpose to bring peace to those suffering pain and mortality actually causes pain and suffering of those they love. It’s an experience that occurs when he’s about to take the life of a little girl. But as the parents leave, refusing to see their child die, Death waits for the hermit bird/gray-brown bird (mentioned in Walt Whitman’s poem ‘When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d’ that welcomes death) to tweet its song and welcome him to fulfill his purpose. But the bird gives no song. This quiet encouragement enables Death to walk away and leave the child to life. It is a moment that Death never forgets. And it is a moment that will later render Death powerless.
