D H Lawrence's novel describes his time in Australia against the background of post-war unrest. The novel offers a fascinating insight to Australia between the wars, its politics, people and landscape. Part of the book deals with the treatment of the Lawrences by the authorities during the first world war and goes some way to explain Lawrence's feelings for England and his quest for a country to live in. The book contains a new Introduction by Alan Avery and a frontispiece of D H Lawrence.
