Before the American Civil War, the term "jayhawker" referred to the intrepid pioneers with more gumption than good sense who streamed out to California to make their fortune in 1849.
This is one man's story of youthful exuberance, frightening near misses, near starvation, and, the thrill of the hunt for gold. Despite getting out some fairly good hauls of several pounds of gold a day, like most jayhawkers, Dow eventually had no fortune to show for it.
But Dow Stephens does have one whale of a story to tell and he was successful in some of his business dealings. In his simple prose (misspellings retained), he conveys the hardships, excitement, and once-in-a-lifetime adventure that was his journey across the continent, a voyage to the Sandwich Islands, and later a trip up to Alaska to prospect.
He settled in San Jose but never seemed to be done with adventure. He ranched, farmed, ran businesses, went to Alaska, and became well-known for his writing. All in all, you'll find the adventurous life of Dow Stephens to be a rollicking good true story.
For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.
