George: “Do you still have poor in this nation, and how do they fare?
Me: “ We do still have poor. I would say they fare quite well at least in comparison to the poor of your day.
George: really, before the revolution we had bread riots in Boston and truly hungry poor, but anyone who enlisted in the revolutionary war was paid and granted a tract of land. They were paid for the service that they rendered in the war and were given the land to free themselves from poverty through hard work.
Me: “ The poor today are provided for. We give them the money for, food, clothing, shelter, and even amenities like entertainment and modern communications like cable television, land line phones, and cell phones. Do you know about cable and
telephones?”
George: “ Yes I do know about your modern inventions. Franklin talks about it incessantly.
George: “ So let me get this straight you think the poor Americans are better off today because you give them everything.
George: “ I think that they were better off in my day. The industrious poor could rise out of the poverty they were in. We did not give them anything. We let them earn pay and land. Land with which they could become successful and independent based off of they fruits of their labors.
