Lilah Wiley Earle is determined to become a woman of importance. She marries a very wealthy man and uses his money to create her world. Lilah's world revolves around creating a restored Square of beautiful Georgian homes with her home at its center. Lilah begins by restoring the early Governor Wiley's Mansion and then moving other significant historical buildings onto the Square. She creates the Tidewater Historical Society and the Wiley Square Association. She makes sure she is President of both associations and sets out to create a world for tourists. Her perfect Square, with everyone following her rules-Lilah's Wiley Square.

Lilah only needs to have one house removed from the Square. It is a lovely Queen Anne style home owned by Eva Bascombe, an elderly woman who loves her home and has no intention of moving. She and the house become an overwhelming problem for Lilah until, as fate would have it, Miss Eva dies. At last Lilah will be able to complete her plan. The Atttorney for the Association discovers that Miss Eva has filed a will. It is a will that he fears revealing to Lilah because he knows she will be furious. Miss Eva has left her home to the son of her long time maid, a boy whom she has helped to educate and who is now a practicing physician in Washington.

Lilah is forced to face the reality that an African American, son of a maid, could come to live on her perfect Square. Lilah must manipulate the other residents and get them involved in putting a stop to this disastrous possibility. As she attempts to prevent the move, Lilah spins out of control and creates a nightmare for Dr. Bradley and for all the residents of Wiley Square.
