Doctor David Kirkcaldy and senior faculty members gather at their local to watch the first episode of his debut TV series. As the credits roll, he realises he has been made a fool of. Disgruntled, a little worse for wear, he makes a swift departure. Outside a limo pulls up, the window is wound down, and Lord Langley asks him to come for a ride. On the way to the Langley estate, the aristocrat tells Kirkcaldy about the ongoing feud between his family and the Howards, which can be traced to the land distributions of the Reformation. The matter can only be resolved by finding a letter allegedly sent by Henry the Eighth. The investigation leads Kirkcaldy on a bumbling adventure through time and space.
