A new chapter in the lives of the Mathis family begins, which threatens their peaceful lives along the Indian River. E. Nelson Fell, in Fellsmere, and Herman J. Zeuch in Vero, have both purchased large plots of land to drain and sell to northern and foreign investors. This will prove to be a death blow to the local truck farmers. Lydia and Melvin and other farmers in the John’s Island area feel the pinch. This tribulation, accompanied by World War I, their child’s death and the death of a beloved brother all contribute to their move to Eagle Bay south of Okeechobee in the year 1920, which they hope will help the Mathis family to prosper again. How will they survive their new tribulations, including the hurricanes of ’26 and ’28? Will Lydia’s faith remain steadfast and will that faith hold the family together?
