Major league baseball returns to Washington, not once but twice. Michael Scanlon toys with the idea of joining the American Association but decides his chances are better in the upstart Union Association. Our guess is that he figured outside of the powerful St. Louis Union team that the competition would be far weaker than that of the American Association. Meanwhile the Association signs on with Lloyd Moxley, who owns the only stadium in Washington. Moxley, who made his money in billboard advertising signs baseball stalwart Holly Hollingshead who acquires, Bob Barr, the best local player. The season starts with the Washington's of the American Association the fan and media favorites. But Scanlon rebuilds his name and soon proves to be the master of the District.

“Baseball in the District,” is the name we have assigned to our project to document the early baseball history for Washington DC. The book follows a detailed chronological narrative, every game is covered. Information about the players is presented to give you a unique view of the season. Local papers and sporting publications are used in order to give the reader a perspective of the era. Historical events are presented as they happened.
