After the great horned owl picks off crows of the WILKINS Roost one by one, hot tempered RUFFLENECK finds himself head of the family and does his best to protect his small flock. As their numbers begin to grow, younger members, CORVISON, OBSIDIAN, HAYSTACK and SHORTTAIL, discover the perils of leading a crow’s life. Relying on their wits to stay alive, birds of prey, automobiles, and farmer’s shotguns are only a few of the dangers these birds learn to survive.
Due to crop rotation, the Wilkins family territory is the only remaining area still growing corn. When larger crow families discover the Wilkins’ good fortune, one family plots to claim the roost for themselves. Owls, hawks and humans prove to be dangerous adversaries, but nothing has prepared the clever family for attacks from their own species.
Outnumbered and driven from their roost by the LONG TOM flock, the Wilkins family spends the winter learning to work together and struggling to stay alive. With spring approaching, the family’s hopes begin to rise as they plot to win back their home.
With the odds stacked against them and everything at stake, the crows must draw upon the strengths of owls, hawks, humans, and every member of the flock to drive the Long Toms out of their home for good. Win or lose, the Wilkins Flock is about find out what it takes TO ROOST.
