As we deal with the first unit, God directs our attention to the living covenant and His covenants that were made with Noah, Abraham, Israel and Joshua. Throughout the ages God made covenants with His people. The unique thing about Judaism (and Christianity) is that it involves God reaching out to man.
From Abraham until now, God has always taken the initiative to reach man and restore the relationship that was lost when sin entered the world.
A covenant is a formal, binding agreement between two parties in which both parties agree to do something. In each of the covenants God made with man, God promised to save man and to bless him in return for mans obedience.
Lesson 2 is God’s confirmation of His promise to give Abram many descendants, beginning with the birth of Isaac to aged parents.
God promised to make Israel His precious treasure and a holy nation is the subject of lesson 3 while lesson 4 features Joshua calling his nation to exclusive devotion to Jehovah and avoidance of false gods and idolatry.
The second unit focuses on the application of God’s covenant in the lives of various judges and kings. We will discuss the cycle of apostasy, repentance and deliverance in the time of judges. We will see how Deborah’s faith in God motivated a military commander name Barak to conquer hostile Canaanites under Sisera.
We will also see how Samuel prayed to God, who brought Israel victory over the Philistines. The Davidic covenant points ahead to its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Solomon’s request was for wisdom. God not only gave him wisdom but also promised him riches, honor, and a long life.
The final unit focuses on living as covenant people. It tells how Elijah defeated the prophets of Baal in the challenge on Mt. Carmel, and how King Josiah discovered God’s neglected law and led Israel in a revival. Our final lesson is taken from 2 Chronicles 36 and Psalm 137 to show how God chastised His people with captivity when they ignored His law, while the last lesson shows how God brought restoration to His people seventy years later.
