Italian Poetry 1950—1990 by Gayle Ridinger and Gian Paolo Renello, Paperback ISBN 9780937832349 $18.95; E-Book ISBN 9780937832202
This bilingual anthology encom¬passes work by three generations of poets. It is intended to introduce read¬ers and students to both experimental and more traditional currents of Ital¬ian poetry during the sec¬ond half of the last century. The first generation (poets born before 1935) includes such names as Nobel Prize winner Eugenio Montale and Pier Paolo Pasolini, together with avant-garde poets like Andrea Zanzotto and Edo¬ardo Sanguineti. The poetry of the sec¬ond generation (born be¬tween 1935 and 1945) re¬veals a clear need to come to terms with the radical experimentation of the past; included are the late Anto¬nio Porta and Nanni Cagno¬ne. The section dedicated to the youngest generation (those born after 1945) features poets ranging from Valerio Magrelli to the leader of the neo-neo-avant-garde, Lello Voce. It also includes selections of prose poetry represen¬tative of the recent exploration of direc¬tions pioneered by Dino Campana. The strong work of six female poets, two per generation, will hopefully right the impression that contemporary Italian poetry is predomi-nantly a male concern. The anthology also provides readers with a general introduc¬tion and a bio-bibliographical note on each poet.
"Ridinger's translations are attentive to individual poetic voices. In all, this is a major step toward bringing these impor¬tant and inventive voices to American readers in a single volume. Recommended for public and academic literary collections." LIBRARY JOURNAL, April 1, 1996.
