It had all the elements of a movie Western: a shootout, posses, marshals, sheriffs, deputies, Indian trackers and soldiers. It became known as the Powers Affair for the brothers who were the central figures.
A sheriff and two of his deputies were killed in a shootout when they attempted to arrest two brothers who were wanted for evading the draft in 1918. Also involved in the shootout were the brothers’ father and another friend and accomplice.
They led posses on an arduous chase through difficult, mountainous terrain for almost a month.
