The Capture of Jefferson Davis as Witnessed by His Personal Secretary

There have many falsehoods about the appearance of Jefferson Davis when he was captured. Many Northern newspapers reported Davis was cowardly disguised as a woman to avoid recognition, wearing a bonnet, a hoopskirt and a frilly dress. In this little work, that conjecture is thoroughly smashed, not only by his private secretary who was with him on the journey from Richmond, but also by a member of the Union forces who was in the party who captured Davis and his entourage.
