Ulysses S. Grant wrote in his memoirs of Don Carlos Buell, "General Buell was a brave, intelligent officer, with as much professional pride and ambition of a commendable sort as I ever knew."

Yet Buell was cashiered from the army during the American Civil War after the battles of Shiloh and Perryville. The North was outraged that Buell had not defeated an outnumbered Confederate force and considered him too cautious.

One man who served with him, James Fry, attempted to give Buell his day in court with this account of Buell's actions from June 10th TO October 30th, 1862. Included here are excerpts from the so-called Buell Commission investigating his command, and Buell's own responses. It all makes for fascinating reading of a little-known and important event in the Civil War.

Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.

For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.
