The Book Of Iowa Films

This is a comprehensive history of films made about Iowa, films made in Iowa, or films with Iowa characters. It is a companion to the "Hollywood in the Heartland" exhibit at the State Historical Museum in Iowa, a blockbuster exhibit that will run until 2016 or 2017. In addition to describing the narrative conventions and stereotypes of the classical Hollywood film, the book provides a pretty of the independent film movement in Iowa. Low cost film production and distribution technologies have allowed Iowa's younger film makers to break away from the old popular stereotypes that we see in the State Fair films (1933, 1945), The Music Man (1962), Field of Dreams (1989) and The Bridges of Madison County (1995). The book also includes the documentary films that have surged in the period after the year 2000.
