Little Crow's Uprising: By a Survivor

Little Crow's Uprising (known by whites as the Sioux Massacre of 1862, the Dakota War of 1862, or Little Crow's War) began in August of 1862 and lasted until December. Instigated by a refusal to pay annuities due to the tribes, the four months of bloodshed resulted in deaths on both sides.

Little Crow fled to Canada but returned to Minnesota and was killed in July of 1863. Eventually a number of Little Crow's warriors were rounded up and hanged.

This exciting survivor account is from the Battle of Birch Coulee in September, 1862. Dr. E.W. Earle was a young man when he fought with U.S. Army troops as a civilian during a 36-hour battle.
