The fifth installment in the continuing story of Taran's people of "Conquered" . . . .
Eighteen-year-old Daigan and his twin sister Lynah were both invited to accompany a diplomatic mission to the world of Lachran, and have travelled there aboard the personal interplanetary vessel for the ruling family of Eymarra. The invitation was arranged by Xylar, the recently promoted commander of that vessel who was already well on his way to winning Lynah’s heart. The young commander had wished to spend some time with her, and Daigan was asked for propriety’s sake to serve as monitor for them during their time together.
Daigan doesn’t mind in the least serving as monitor for his sister, for he knows Xylar would do nothing to dishonor Lynah; in fact the man repeatedly went out of his way to prove his intentions toward her were nothing but honorable. Daigan fully expects his time to be spent in following the adoring couple through a wide variety of sightseeing locations, and keeping a casual eye on them from across the room when they were in more private settings.
In a word—boring.
But during their first visit to the local market on Lachran, he encounters the troubled Calise and her rambunctious son Waran. The moment he first makes eye contact with the lovely, blue-eyed woman he knows without a doubt he was destined to meet her; but for what reason? Though there’s a strong attraction between them which neither can deny, he soon discovers her life is already joined to another man’s—a cruel drunkard who beats her repeatedly at whim. Daigan knows he must help this poor, defenseless woman and her son, but how can he when honor prevents him from coming between the bond of husband and wife?
And soon he’d be forced to leave Lachran when Eymarra’s diplomatic mission here was done; he was still under obligation to serve as monitor for his sister, after all. But how could he make himself leave Calise and Waran behind when there was a dark sense of foreboding steadily closing in on his every thought of them? He knew that once Lynah was safely returned to their parents on Milar he’d be free to return to Lachran, but that journey would take several spans to complete. Would he be able to make it all the way to Milar and back again, with a side stop on Eymarra, before certain disaster finally befell Calise and her son?
