Civil War Letters of Captain Joseph E. Fiske

Like all the young people of his generation, Joseph Fiske was absorbed by news of the American Civil War. Before he enlisted, while studying at Andover Theological Seminary, he wrote his observations in letters to his parents. He also writes with anxiety about "chums" who have already gone off to war and have been seriously wounded.

Soon enough, he was in the army and commanding men as a captain. He happily reports he has more in him than perhaps his parents thought:

"You see you didn't know me when you thought I couldn't stand marching &c."

He saw battle and was eventually captured. Remarkably, even in a Rebel POW camp, he is able to still write to his parents and request clothing, money, and writing materials. He finally escaped and spent the rest of the war with Sherman's command.
