All her life, Christy has dreamed of serving the King who lives in the magnificent castle on the hill above her town. When she receives her invitation to become a member of the Pirate Girls, one of his Majesty’s most elite teams, her troubles begin immediately. Her parents discourage her from boarding Golden Cross, the King’s luxuriously outfitted yacht. Her father warns she has never been away from the protection of the King and is not prepared to face his unseen enemy. Her mother questions her physical ability to keep up with the challenges of the program. Confident it is her destiny, she dismisses their concerns and begins preparing for her trip.
On the day of the mission, while hiking up the hill to receive her instructions from the King, Christy is overcome with doubt. Her fears increase when she witnesses the King and his trusted advisors strategizing in front of holographic war map. Christy is fitted with special vision goggles designed to peer into the spiritual world. While having them calibrated, she is alarmed to see the senior Pirate Girls arrayed in full spiritual battle gear and evil dark shapes hovering at the back of the throne room.
Aboard the Golden Cross, Christy struggles to keep up with the grueling routine of exercises, chores, and schoolwork. Every time the girls gather to study the King’s instructions about the enemy, she becomes nauseous and feels icy drafts brush past her body. Her mind feels as if it is in a vice. Despite having a strong relationship with the King back home and spending long hours reviewing her notes, she struggles to understand his words.
The Pirate Girls’ mission is to help the King save the inhabitants of Green Island from a sinister plot to destroy them. The fate of the island depends on Christy’s recognition of the enemy’s schemes against her and the mission. If she is to succeed, she must stand in a power greater than her own.
