Famed as a socialite and author in antebellum America, Madame Octavia Le Vert was received by royalty and nobility on her travels in Europe in 1853-1856. She had an audience with Queen Victoria as well as the Pope.
With the readiest and keenest powers of perception, with a mind fully informed historically as to all the localities she visited, with a wonderfully retentive memory, her letters were not meant for publication. But their content was so attractive and detailed that some of the letters made their way into the press. Upon her return, they were published in this book.
An opponent of secession, uncomfortable with southern slavery, Octavia Le Vert nonetheless worked in Confederate hospitals during the American Civil War. She lost her husband and their fortune during the war and later attempted an unsuccessful lecture career. We are fortunate that her work survives from her travels.
