Edward Payson Roe (March 7, 1838 – July 19, 1888) is an American writer, priest and pastor. Edward Payson Roe was born in Moodna, Orange County, New York. He studied at Williams College and at Auburn Theological Seminary. During the American Civil War, he wrote articles for newspapers and then lectured about the war and wrote for periodicals. At the time, he was a very popular novelist, especially among middle-class people. His novels have been translated into several European languages.
This novel described the life of some people in terms of the Civil War. The men of the Northern armies were convinced, that they had fought men and Americans--men whose devotion to a cause sacred to them was as pure and exalted as their own. It is time that sensible men and women should be clever enough to recognize that. The author narrated the original motives of political leaders; the people on both sides were sincere and honest.
