The Discipline of Prayer

This pamphlet owes its existence to the suggestion of Howard Brinton that the addresses I gave at a Pendle Hill Retreat in September 1947 should be revised for publication. I have done this, but have thought it best to preserve the form in which they were delivered. A chapter is added on prayer in daily life, a subject only briefly touched upon in the talks.

I wish it were possible to reproduce the substance of our discussions. Together we discovered a number of truths that alone we might have missed. These insights and the powerful silence which accompanied them have entered into the inner experience of those who participated in the Retreat. Although we could not, perhaps, express them in a form suitable for publication, they have become a part of what each of us as an individual has to give.
