My involvement with the Filipino tribal peoples began one summer night in 1976 when I heard those guns in Mindanao.
My heart had already been given to the tribal peoples, so often impoverished and victimized on every side. From that night onward, however, I found myself thrust in the midst of bitter controversy between church and state and, even more dangerous, between the martial law dictatorship and rebels inspired by Chinese Maoists.
What I have learned inwardly and spiritually from my involvement moved me closer to the gospel root of my own Quaker faith. In sharing the story, I center on myself, my own shortcomings, the roots of war in my own life, in the hope that other Friends will identify with them enough to look through my experience to their own. Each of us must be honed and purified and broken down in God's hands if we are to be of much use. Filipino, American, Catholic, or Quaker – I doubt that our labels make much difference.
