Tessa woke up to the smell of bacon and eggs floating into her room. "Oh that smells so good", she said as she waltzed into the kitchen where Ooslah was cooking and singing.
"Good morning, Tessa, I hope you are hungry."
"Famished. When are you going to show me where you get all this food from?" she asked, peeking over his shoulders as he cooked. Ooslah did not answer. Remembering the incident with the MKR caused him to want to exercise caution with Tessa. Was she ready?
"Hello, anybody home in there?" Tessa said in his ear, laughing.
"Oh my, yes! You caught me daydreaming". he clucked, "Today Tessa. We will go together today." He put down his spatula, folded his wings and turned to face her, "but you must promise me that you will do as I say and listen to me at all times, understand?"
"Yes I understand" Tessa said wistfully as she grabbed a piece of bacon and shoved it in her mouth. "Umm, that is so good", she licked her fingers.
"I am serious Tessa", Ooslah said slowly and softly, staring right at her. Tessa stopped and looked at Ooslah.
"It is very dangerous out there Tessa. I was almost captured the last time. This is not a game."
"I promise I will listen to you and do what you tell me to do Ooslah. Cross my heart," Tessa gestured. Of course her fingers were crossed behind her back with the other hand.
"Okay then, let's eat." Not only did he prepare eggs and bacon, there was also a huge stack of pancakes and maple syrup and fresh orange juice. Tessa filled herself stopping only when she was done. Ooslah watched her eat amazed at how much food she could put away while he pecked his special treat of fresh prairie grass and sunflower seeds.
When they finished, Ooslah cleared the table and placed a large map there. He pointed to the area of Alameda county. "This is where we are headed today. I saw many fields there on a fly over. If we are lucky we will find vegetables and fruit and maybe more chickens!"
"Why are we going all the way to California when we are in Alaska? Aren't there any farms closer than that?" Tessa asked.
"California is, or was the bread basket for the U.S. we have a better chance of finding food there than anywhere." Ooslah replied.
"That is over three thousand miles away! How long is that going to take? What if I get tired or I have to go to the bathroom?"
"Tessa, please stop sniveling like a girl."
"I am a girl!"
"A special girl, remember, and I am a special Bird. Remember when I brought you here, on my back?
"Yes I do, and that took a long time," said Tessa.
