The purpose of this course is to provide physicians with the information necessary to recognize, appropriately treat, and prevent pneumonia and its complications, thereby helping to alleviate a major clinical illness and important public health burden. In addition, members of the public may use this course to enhance their personal knowledge of the subject matter presented.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

1. Analyze the development and classification of pneumonia infection.
2. Evaluate the epidemiology and risk factors of community-acquired pneumonia.
3. Identify etiological factors of community-acquired pneumonia, including pathogens most commonly associated with infection in adults and children.
4. Use established diagnostic criteria to appropriately identify and categorize community-acquired pneumonia.
5. Develop a management plan for a given case of community-acquired pneumonia in an adult or child, including the selection of empiric antibiotic therapy appropriate to clinical context and site of care.
6. Devise prevention strategies, including vaccination, for community-acquired pneumonia.
7. Identify the epidemiology and risk factors of hospital-acquired, ventilator-associated, and nursing home-acquired pneumonia.
8. Describe etiological factors of healthcare-associated pneumonia.
9. Analyze and select treatment options for the various types of healthcare-associated pneumonia.
10. Identify and implement measures to reduce the risk for pneumonia associated with healthcare facilities.
