Henry David Thoreau was an American writer, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, essayist, and poet. A leading transcendentalist, he believed in social equality, spiritual self-improvement, closeness to nature and freedom from material interests.
In the 1850's Thoreau had become a land surveyor, an occupation which afforded him much time to go for long walks where he could immerse himself in his natural surroundings and gather information to further write about. He kept lengthy and detailed journal accounts of his travels; so, "A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers", published in 1849, is based on a boat trip from Concord, Massachusetts to Concord, New Hampshire, and back, that he took with his brother.
We present you the literary works of one of the world's greatest nature writers, and as the years pass, his fame steadily increases. Enjoy the reading.
