VICTORY TOGETHER FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.: THE STORY OF DR. WARREN H. STEWART, SR., GOVERNOR EVAN MECHAM AND THE HISTORIC BATTLE FOR A MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. HOLIDAY IN ARIZONA is the only extensive and personal historical account of Arizona's Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday campaign that records Arizona's metamorphosis as the only state in the Union to have its King holiday rescinded and defeated at the polls to the only state
to approve the King holiday by an overwhelming vote of the people in a general election in 1992.
This book's contents journal, through my eyes, mind and heart, a historical and autobiographical account of Arizona's MLKJr. holiday struggle from 1986 to 1993. It deals with the impact and influence of three individuals on an entire state--Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., former Governor Evan Mecham, and yours truly, born and reared in Coffeyville, Kansas, and sent to the First Institutional Baptist Church in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1977 via Dallas, Texas, and New York City. I believe that my former positions as general chairperson of two of the major MLKJr. holiday coalitions which
successfully campaigned for the holiday, namely, ARIZONANS FOR A MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. STATE HOLIDAY from November 1986 to January 1990, and VICTORY TOGETHER from November 1990 to November 1992, uniquely qualifies me to write this historic book.
