Charles Montgomery Skinner was an American writer, editor, dramatic and art critic, mostly known as a collector and rewriter of North American folklore. He published collections of myths, legends, histories and oral narrative found inside the United States and across the world.

The narration is about Umatilla, chief of the Indians at the Cascades of the Columbia, who was one of the wisest leaders and one of few Native Americans who favored peace with the white settlers.
