Tomas Hardy was one of the most renowned writers, novelists and poets in English literary history. Published more than 25 literary works, including novels, short stories collections and poetry, Hardy is considered as an author of naturalism movement.
"The Trumpet-Major" is the only historical novel of Hardy, first published in 1880. The book describes the love peripeteias of a young woman, Anne Garland, being pursued by three suitors: John Loveday, the eponymous trumpet major in a British regiment, honest and loyal; his brother Bob, a flighty sailor; and Festus Derriman, the cowardly nephew of the local squire.
