William Taylor Adams (1822 – 1897), pseudonym Oliver Optic, was a famous academic, author, and a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Adams in whole wrote over 100 books and most of them for a boy audience.
«Up the River» is the sixth and final volume of «The Great Western Series». The plot and events of the story occur in different places, on the coast of sunny Florida, in Gulf of Mexico, and on the Mississippi River. The story narrates of a return of the bravest hero, not often frighten of difficulties, to his home in Michigan. Principles of the main character became stronger, he got wiser and better since he was first introduced to the reader. He made a lot of mistakes, but it doesn't matter what kind of bad inspiration or attitude he may impart to the reader, he will stay a true and noble boy with straight mind of duty.
