Secret Lives is an historical novel. It takes place just prior to Boardwalk Empire, in 1919. The central story is about a pornographer. However, unlike most of this genre, it's not a grimy story. The people involved are sophisticated and, mostly, well to do. It is early days in the world of motion pictures. It's early days of cine pornography too.
This story takes place in the cusp between the end of the Great War (1918) and the start of the 'Roaring Twenties'.. A lot is happening. The whole society is changing. Telephones are in. Radio is in. Cars are in. Social revolution is in the air.
The United States starts its first 'war on drugs'. The timing is awful because a huge number of wounded soldiers are addicted to morphine pain killers. This addiction casts a wide net of troubles.
Hovering over the whole planet is the horrific Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 and 1919 which kills 675,000 Americans and 20% of the world's population. It devastates families, as well as the entire American economy.
So it's the story about people and about what happens to them when they are caught up in all this change. To say the story is just about pornography, would be missing the point. This story is about the people, each struggling in their own way with their own problems. A few unlucky ones become entangled with a dazzling, wealthy, pornographer. The story is about them and him.
Patrick Clarke is the pornographer. He is clever, rich, and he is dangerous
