Fifteen-year-old Mallen de la Pena lives aboard a cityship, a star-faring vessel with a crew of thousands. Since his parents were killed on an exploratory mission Mal has led an isolated existence that is almost completely divorced from the rest of the crew; his only real companion is the cityship's computer, Zhang. The lonely Mal is happy to have the chance to aid eminent archeologist Jonathan Archer catalog a collection of alien artifacts, but his excitement turns to horror when the ship's teleportation device suffers a catastrophic malfunction and Archer is killed. Then, only a few hours later, Mal himself almost dies – in a million-to-one accident. Only then does he begin to understand: Jonathan Archer did not die by chance – he was murdered. When the authorities refuse to believe him, Mal must become a Sherlock Holmes to find the killer, with Zhang as his Doctor Watson...
