James Fenimore Cooper was a popular American writer in 19th century. He was best known for his historical romances. Before his writer career, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Midshipman, which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings.
"The Oak Openings" is one the best James Cooper's novels. Some experts could never include it to the list of the best classical works. Perhaps he is best known for his novels "The Last of the Mohicans" and wrote extensively about the American Indians. The idea of that is alive in this story as well, with the theme of the Indians as the lost tribe of Israel. It is the only novel he ever made that is set in Michigan.
