Edwin Sidney Hartland (1848–1927) was a british author specialized on folklore. He is known for tales anthologies and collection, works on mythology, ethnology and anthropology. He belived in scientific picture of beliefs and traditions, that could be composed through through the gathering end exploring folklore.
The History of Tom Thumb is folk tale collected by Edwin Hartland. The story is set in medieval Britain, in times of King Arthur. It follows Merlin, the most skilled and witted sorcerer of his time. He used to wander under various disguises, and one day, when he was under the mask of poor beggar, he met a countryman. The country man was so kind, the willingly let the beggar, who was Merlin, to stay and eat at his home. The wizard was pleased with such deed, that he decided to solve whatever problem they had. And it turned out, the peasant and his wife had a good reason to be unhappy.
