Early Records of Hancock County, Georgia

Hancock County, Georgia was established on December 17, 1793 and was originally part of Greene and Washington Counties. It is Georgia's fifteenth county. The Hancock County Courthouse was destroyed by fire on August 11, 2014. Property deeds, birth and marriage certificates and many other vital records dating back to 1795 were destroyed.

The records compiled in this book are important to those researching their African-American roots, those with ancestors who moved from the Georgia counties of Jefferson, Burke and Columbia counties, as well as the states of Virginia and North Carolina. Keep in mind, if your ancestor fought in the Revolutionary War, he may have moved to Georgia in order to participate in the many land grants and lotteries.

Records included in this book are: early history; executions in the county; deeds from 1785 to 1800; the 1807, 1827 and Cherokee land lottery of 1832; marriages 1806-1850; wills and estates 1799-1822; newspaper excerpts 1801-1864; Revolutionary War pensioners; soldiers who enlisted in Hancock County in the War Between the States.
