After thirty years of being on hold, Void of Reckoning has finally been written and published in digital form. The question now looming over the digits of Father Time is, "Will it become a printed novel?'
Void of Reckoning is a fictional supernatural action/adventure story available as an eBook at Barnes & Noble, Kindle and iBooks as well as on my website for those using Windows, but it's just not complete without a printed edition. This project is an attempt to fund that final step in the process. The funding goal covers the cost of acquiring a publisher/printer, initial publishing costs, a healthy inventory, copies for distribution to media, and to fill pledges.
How Void of Reckoning evolved.
Thirty years (30) have come and gone since the plot for Void of Reckoning first appeared in my mind. I don't know where it came from but then I rarely know where anything I write comes from.
I was living in Pittsburgh, PA working for a computer company called Datapoint Corp. I had a dog that was half Collie and half Shepherd. Her name was Sandy. She loved to run in the wooded area behind our house so I often took her there after dinner.
During one of those walks, I found myself thinking about a scenario where a teenager named Sam found a man named Jasi standing over his mother's lifeless body. In that scenario Sam killed Jasi but that's not where it ended. Jasi swore with his dying breath that he would return from death to savor sweet revenge. The obvious question: "How would Jasi's evil spirit do that?"
As one day's walk led to another, the story grew in my mind. Another evil man (Salar) evolved. He acquired an ancient book of the black arts obtained by killing a witch. That book obtained a long forgotten chant with the power to fracture the walls of a hell-like dimension where evil spirits were imprisoned. He believed supernatural powers could be gained by opening that dimension.
The progression of the story took on a life of its own. As the story-years went by, Sam became a city cop with a reputation for taking down those who refused to be taken alive but Sam needed a partner.
A young lady (Kari) filled that position. She killed the man who raped her on the same day Sam killed Jasi. The spirit of the man she killed escaped the Void of Reckoning right behind Jasi. He possessed Salar's friend named Wais. At that point there were two evil spirits on a vendetta to kill Sam and Kari using the bodies of the men they possessed.
By simply being in the right place at the right time, Kari was recruited as an agent for the Federal Government with a license to kill. She was trained to tackle the most powerful cartels and survive.
Sam and Kari had to become partners but not too soon in the story. Their personalities had to mature before they would be capable of fulfilling their destiny. A destiny to send the two evil spirits back into the Void of Reckoning.
It seemed there was no end to the interruptions that would take me away from writing the Void of Reckoning. A special assignment in my district lasting nearly two years was the first. A transfer to Detroit for another special assignment that lasted nearly a year followed close behind. A third transfer to Denver completely changed my career path.
Although Void of Reckoning was always somewhere in my mind, it was dormant and probably hiding in the place from where it came. It would come out again but not until the time was right.
Even so, a writer must write. That is not optional. To stop writing is to stop life itself. The subject matter is like the drifting sands of the desert. It can be anything. My love for mountains and deserts took me on a detour away from the Void Of Reckoning. I began writing guide books to ghost towns, outlaw hideouts, and other scenic and historic locations.
In the meantime, a decision by Datapoint's marketing people in Texas destroyed the company. Our leaders had submitted false sales reports to the stock market. The stocks crashed and the company was taken over by a corporate raider. I was laid off in 1991 ending a 15 year career. My life went into a tailspin.
Fortunately, my hobby of writing guide books had grown into a part-time business. For the first time in my life, I had to make a living by writing. I turned writing guide books into a full-time business that lasted seven years. That was followed by a series of part-time work.
When 2013 rolled around, I was able to retire by selling some farmland in Illinois. It was not a comfortable retirement because the money is on a timer. It will eventually run out. On the other hand, Void of Reckoning came out of hiding and took its place in my mind. After two more years the digital book finally went live.
"You cannot avoid your destiny." After being on hold for 30 years, Void of Reckoning has a clear path to whatever its destiny is."
